たたく【叩く， 敲く】

**strike

1 〔打つ〕 strike; beat; hit; knock; swat 《a fly》; (平手で) slap; spank; (こつこつ) rap; (軽く) tap; pat; (強く) pound; bang; (打ち合わせる) clap 《hands》.

●子供のお尻を叩く spank a child

・尻を叩いて急がせる slap sb on the bum to make him hurry up; nag sb to hurry up

・頭を叩く strike [hit, slap, pound] sb on the head; rap sb over the head

・棒で空缶を叩く hit an empty can with a stick

・手で額を軽く叩く tap [strike] one's forehead with one's hand

・頬をぴしゃっと叩く slap sb on the cheek

●(爆撃機などが)敵陣を叩く pound an enemy position

・論敵を叩く attack one's opponent (in an argument)

・ひどく叩かれる be severely criticized [censured]; be lambasted 《by a critic》

・新聞で叩かれる be attacked in the newspaper(s) [by a newspaper, by the newspapers]

・世論に叩かれる be censured by public opinion.

●(敵を)叩いてやろう. Let's let them have it.

・戦争になればまずその空軍基地が叩かれるだろう. If war breaks out, that air base would probably be the first to be attacked [pounded].

4 〔肉･魚などを打って軟らかく細かくする〕 chop into small pieces; pound. [⇒たたき¹ 1]

●アジをたたく chop a horse mackerel into small pieces.

5 〔値切る〕 beat down the price of…; haggle for a lower price. [⇒かいたたく]

●叩けばもっと安くなる. If you keep haggling, the price'll go down even lower.

6 〔述べ立てる〕 talk 《big》.

●大口をたたく boast; brag

・偉そうな口をたたくな. Don't talk so big.

・陰口をたたく talk bad about sb

・むだ口をたたく talk idly; make idle [pointless] conversation

・減らず口をたたく talk [sass] back (again and again)

・軽口をたたく crack jokes [banter] 《with sb》.
